How the instant estimate works

Each material starts from Stakeline Fence Co.'s typical installed price per foot for a six-foot fence on flat ground. That price includes posts set in concrete, rails, the pickets, panels or mesh, standard hardware and clean-up. The tool adjusts it for the height you choose and the ground along the fence line, multiplies it by the length, then adds gates, old fence removal and any extras, and shows the result as a range.

Not sure of your length? Use Measure my yard: enter the width and depth of your yard and tick the sides you want fenced. If the house closes off the front, leave the front unticked. Measuring the actual line with a tape or a long wheel is always more accurate.

Materials, briefly

• Wood — natural, private and easy to repair; stain every few years to make it last.
• Vinyl — never needs paint or stain; costs more up front.
• Aluminum — ornamental, open and rust-free; ideal for front yards and pools.
• Chain link — the most affordable per foot, tough and quick to install.
• Composite — the look of wood with almost no upkeep; the highest starting price.

Why the final price can differ

Some costs can't be known without seeing the property: the exact line and any survey needed, buried utilities found by locates, tree roots, rock or old concrete in the holes, slopes, access for equipment, permits and shared-fence arrangements with neighbours.
